Many people's lives look good on paper but in reality involve significant struggle:
I offer Psychotherapy that aims to support you and challenge you to develop in the areas of life that are less amenable to strenuous effort and instead require a different kind of exploration and experimentation: how you feel, how you relate, how you create meaning.
The foundation of my practice is extensive training in evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy). Over the years of practice, I have come to draw on many lines of therapeutic wisdom (somatic, trauma-based, relational, dynamic). But I identify primarily as a practitioner — I am always looking for what is valuable to my clients.
With all my clients I seek a balance of understanding and action:
Understanding: We will shape a nuanced, resonant view of your situation and how you act in that situation.
Action: We will translate our understanding into a clear path towards change. There will often be homework for you to practice between sessions.
I will offer you empathy and compassion. I will also offer you honesty and challenge. Our sessions will be successful when you are able to not only do things differently as a result of meeting with me, but also find a different perspective on and experience of situations in your life. We will communicate about this balance and how well we are reaching your goals as we move along. The developmental path before you is real. It involves suffering and challenging yourself to grow, but that is not all it involves.
My purpose is to help you overcome whatever psychological challenges you face and to more meaningfully act on what matters to you. I balance my training as a clinical psychologist with my expertise as a leadership coach and organizational consultant, so I can help you across personal and professional parts of your life.
Common areas of focus include:
self awareness
working with fears/anxieties
emotion/mood regulation
improving communication
practicing self organization: how to act effectively, set goals, etc.
I am available for therapy sessions for Washington State residents via video-conference/phone. In my experience, and according to the research, remote sessions are equally impactful to in person meetings.
